Bluestem Track Club - Virtual Reality 5k

Everything is cancelled for running.  It's unfortunate, but it's a good idea to keep people alive and stuff.  Now's not the time to gather in big, sweaty groups, and now is also not the time to whine about not being able to gather in big, sweaty groups.  Now is the time to run fast - FOR NO REASON.

The Bluestem Track Club is a mostly fake running club, so it only makes sense that our first event will be a virtual race.  In order to help you become a social distance distance runner, the format for our race is all virtual.  Here's how to do it:

  • Go to the start line (in front of Tallgrass Taphouse) and run the Brew2Shoe 5k course AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

  • Record your time and distance and a map from your phone or watch and take a screenshot or something similar and email it to bluestemtrackclub@yahoo.com - I made a yahoo email just because I was surprised yahoo still exists.

  • Do all of this between March 16 and April 20

Along the way, I will update the age group results as we go, and they'll be final at 12:01 a.m. on April 21.

I will post complete results and age group awards that day.  And the awards...Also virtual - meaning - you don't get anything.  But - this will be the closest thing to a road race in Manhattan for at least a while, so why wouldn't you do this?  it's free of course.

This is the course - it's the same as the Brew2Shoe course in August - which you should run when August comes.  This course was designed by Ben and Trey at Manhattan Running Company - and it was USATF certified for distance by Steve Riley.  We're using this course because it's fast, pretty simple, and it actually doesn't really cross any major roads.  Just pay attention crossing Juliette, 11th, and Fremont, and you should be good.  All of those streets have push button crosswalks.  Keep in mind, there is no assistance or traffic control - look where you are going, and bring whatever you need with you.  This is ENTIRELY UNSANCTIONED by any governing body or anything like that.

Some strategy tips:

  • There are sidewalks the whole way, but town is kind of deserted and running in the street will be faster.  most of the streets on the course are very wide
  • Run by yourself or with one or two other people.  That's the whole friggin point.
  • Send me as much info as you have to prove your time, but I'm not going to call the CIA to investigate your claims.  This is all honor system stuff.

If we're able to get in groups again, we'll have a get-together to celebrate that, and that we were all troopers when this whole thing went down.  If we're never in groups again - nice knowing ya.

Leave a comment with any questions as well, and I'll answer as quick as possible.

MRC is doing a number of things to help you out while it's social distance time - curbside pickup - in town delivery - free shipping out of town.  Be cool and help a local biz out when you need shoes.  Times might get tough.
